    Try holding the test tube horizontally, and cover each individual color bar on the chart. When you get to the closest match, the edge of the color bar will totally blend with the liquid and be nearly impossible to make out. If you can see the edge of the color bar through the liquid, then it is not the closest match.

    This method doesn't work for phosphate because the liquid isn't saturated enough.
