Here is a video of how my skimmer is running right now:

I've never been able to get that super brown gross looking skimate. It is usually a light brown that you can see through or a dark green/brown.

My question is should I raise the cup up because I am letting in too many bubbles before they pop?

its all personal prefernce. I like to get a wet skim. But your right, if you do want that think brow sludge, raise it up a bit.

dont know if that even helped but its all personal preference basicly

I used to keep my rubber ring at the very bottom of the cup..... right where it started to curve. Very thick, nasty, dark stuff.

Every individual skimmer will be a little different. Experiment with it and see what you can get.

I was always under the impression that you wanted the brown, dark muddy stuff? The lighter skimate is just as good?

There are drawbacks and benefits to both light and dark skimmate. Mostly, the light skimmate will pull out a LOT more water. This will cause your salinity levels to start creeping down. If you know it is happening, it can be easily kept up with, but most just choose not to deal with it.
