aqua clear to a fuge conversion....

i heard this some where drinking with a reefer....
i have a 20 gallon nano...
smallest i will ever go!!!!
i have a aqua clear 70

basicly all i would need to do is put sand or mud in the sump are of the filter... remove lid attach small light......
add chaeto....now the question is what do i add so it doesnt get throu the opening on the front of filter...
i was thinking some ammonia pad????
any input will the pad kill the algae???
