Well I have come across a delimma. I have originally bought this skimmer for my 100 gallon tank that got lost (thanks UPS) during shipping. Now I just came across what I think is an awesome deal on craigslist on another tank, which I will pick up tomorrow but it is a 120 gallon tank. My question is will this skimmer still work efficient on a 120 gallon tank.

It will be fine, just dont add 5 more fish cause you got an extra 20 gallons capacity.

what would be the recommended number of fish in a 120 gallon tank. I now I have 2 clowns and a snowflake eel in my 29 gallon that I will eventually move into the 120. Wife wont let me have 2 tanks (darn it). She will do most of the upkeeping so I understand her completely.
I would love a school of fish and a few tangs.

Most commonly recommended is about 1" fish per 2 gallons of SW; for FW it is 1" per 1 gallon.

I dont buy into those general "rules of thumb"

I have actually heard it should be 1" per 5 gallons of salt water not 2

but here's my point. I have a 90 gallon tank and by the 1" per 2G SW you just gave me permission to run out and add 45 fish to my tank. And even with the 1" per 5G SW = 18 fish!
My original post stated a plan for 5 fish total and as a scuba diver who has dove around the world including on the Great Berrier Reef I can tell you that is overcrowded by the oceans standards.

Anyway I'll say it again, i'm the wrong person to ask.
    good luck :)

You should be fine if you don't overstock. I agree more with the rule 1" per 5 gallons, because I would rather be on the safe side. When you are looking at fish be sure to keep in mind that most get quite large and you should plan for their adult size. I would start off your plans with one tang if you want any at all and work your way down in size from there. Here is how I would stock it:

    1 small to medium tang
    1 dwarf angel
    1 or 2 small wrasses
    pair of clowns
    a couple of small gobys
    a couple of shrimp species
    a good CUC

This would be a fairly low amount but would still give you good variety and movement of different types.
