Many use Aqua-Lifter dosing pumps to maintain siphon in their HOB overflows. These pumps in this application can become clogged and cause the siphon to break and the display tank to overflow. To prevent this I have two pumps to swap out if the other becomes clogged. Here is the procedure for taking the pump apart and cleaning the internals:

On the bottom of the pump by the rubber feet are four screws. Remove these screws and pull the cover off the pump exposing the diaphragm assembly:

The diaphragm assembly is held in place by a single screw which can be removed and the assembly removed from the pump housing.

With the diaphragm assembly removed the rubber boots can be pulled off to allow access to the valves (note the screw that holds the assembly to the housing):

Generally this is enough disassembly to clean the gunk that is clogging the pump. In extreme cases it may be necessary to remove the valves. This is accomplished by removing the single screw holding the valves to the assembly:

Wouldn’t a pre filter help keep it from getting clogged?

Thanks for this pictorial - I was just thinking today about my old Aqua-Lifter pump and rigging it up on my tank. If I find it I will take another look at this.
