Are you talking about the internal water level or the water level of the sump the skimmer sits in?
If it's the internal water, close off the air completely. The water level should be where the dark acrylic and the clear acrylic neck meet. Get the water level there, then reopen the air valve.
If you are talking external water, as long as the outlet is not submerged, you are ok. :)

I am worried about the water depth on the outside. Under my stand I have 26" top to bottom of the tank. The walls in my sump are about 9". Every sump I see with one of these in it has the skimmer on a stand. Just worried that it will not fit....

Look in my gallery, I have my EV-180 on a stand too. I have about 25-26" in my stand too, it works. My PVC stand is only about 5" tall, that's all I needed to leave enough evaporation water level in my sump to go a week without topoffs.

    Here is my stand.

Some of us don't have a sump that big to have all that room Luna, sheesh. <insert jealous humor here> hehe ;)
All joking aside, do you ever worry about the eggcrate breaking under the weight of the skimmer? Though I guess it wouldn't since the skimmer is directly over the eggcrate shelf ledge thingies.

Not worried at all, but if it did, I would just find another solution.

The sump/refugium is 47" long and the height from the floor to the top is 31"
