I'm beginning the set up for my aquarium in what is month four of the pre-set up process (go slow and read a lot, right? I'm nearing the end of every relevant book in the Chicago Public Library system).

Sidebar: My chemical additives for the reef I don't yet have just arrived! More importantly, the Hydor 360 rotating deflector.

Anyways, my question is I have an AquaC Remora Pro HOB skimmer with the Maxi Jet 1200 that I bought used. It's on the aquarium right now and I am doing wet runs, with just tap water in the tank to make sure there are no slow leaks, all the equipment still works (some is from my FW tank some 10 years ago), etc. The pump runs just fine, but there aren't any really fine bubbles, and there is no foam created. I'm a self-admitted newbie at this, but I sank a bit of money into this equipment so I was wondering if this is normal. I am guessing I may just have to wait on the answer because 1) Even though I bought the skimmer used, it seems like it may have been used only a month (or less, there is almost no salt build up), and there is a bit of "break in" time for the Remora's 2) There are no dissolved organics in the water to skim out 3) the consistency of freshwater won't yield microbubbles and skimmate like SW might. Anyone else have thoughts on my missing microbubbles and skimmate, is it a function of freshwater, breaking in, or is there trouble with the Remora?

Sidebar: As my screen name denotes, I live in Chicago and I am pretty sure the President in Marine One just choppered over my house. Kinda cool, that's a big heli!

The skimmer won't froth up with tap water due to it's pH I believe. It will only work right with saltwater.
