AquaC Remora w/ dif pump

Just a quick question...

What would happen if i ran a remora with a mag3 or something similar? I have the skimmer in the sump and I modded the intake so it would work insump. I just extended the tube about 4" and i realize that this lessens the effectiveness of the pump, which i've noticed has become less efficient (which is a maxi-jet 1200). but could i run it with a higher ghp pump? while having the tubing at a length to where the pump sits on the bottom of the sump?

what pump would be ideal for this situation?

 

I've heard of other people doing this with mag pumps. I don't remember which ones but they said it worked great.

 

I've only ever used my remora with a mag 3. It worked well, however I can't offer a comparison to how well it performed vs. other pumps.

 

i read the remora requires about 300ghp...at say 6-8" of head, a mag3 would work? what do you think?

 

I know Otty did something similar to this when he had his Remora set up on the old 55. I'm not sure what pump but he oversized it to see if it would work better. I believe it did, but I don't know for sure...

According to the chart here marineandreef.com/ Reef Aquarium Supply (Aquarium Lighting, Coralife light, Aquarium Light, Power Compact, Compact Fluorescent, Metal Halide Lights, Aquarium Chillers, Aquarium Pumps, Coralife lighting, UV Sterilizer, Reef Aquarium, Current USA AquaP - the mag 3 pushes about 350 gph at 12". You'd be a little over the 300 but I think it would work. I guess you could even get a valve and tune it down a little if you didn't want too much more than 300 gph.

i run mine with a mag 5 in the sump, works awesome, simpler than 2 separate pumps, you need to rework the plumbing a little because the remora's input is pointing down, i'm still working on perfecting how its hooked up but its been running fine with with some jerry rigged vinyl tubing so far, the power after 4" of head is impressive compared to the maxijet 1200
