i just got it a few weeks ago. so far i am very happy. The drain fitting is basically a hole drilled into the collection cup with a fitting for you to attach some tubing to. If you are worried about the cup filling too fast, or just want some peace of mind, then get it.
Like i said, i really like it, but then again this is the first high quality skimmer that i have had, so i dont have much to compare it to.

I still don't understand what happens when you don't have the drain fitting. If the entire unit is in the sump, would it matter at all?

it just means you have to take the collection cup off and dump it. If you dont wet skim, and you dont plan on using the skimmer for water changes, i would just not get the drain fitting. It doesnt change the function of the skimmer.
