Debating on doing the Aquaclear DIY fuge but had a few questions. Does it have to be the Aquaclear 70 or can you use the larger models such as the 110? Also would either of those turned into a DIY fuge be enough for a 37 gallon tank? We dont have room under the tank for a sump or a remote mounted fuge so we were looking for a cheap HOB alternative and couldnt grasp shelling out the cash for a new one.

You can use most any model of HOB filter to make a fuge. The advantage of the Aqua Clears is that you can see some of what's going on inside. I think it could be very beneficial to your tank. The key to a fuge working is not having a bunch of chaeto sitting in it. The chaeto consumed nitrates and phosphates to grow, so the key is to keep growth room in there. Keep your chaeto trimmed and it will always be growing and cleaning your water. On top of that it adds bio-diversity and a home for pods.

You can use any size HOB, as mikejrice said, AC70s are popular because they are clear. Also it allows you to mount a light on the side and it will still penetrate through. I myself have an AC70 modded to a fuge for my 3 gal pico.
