I have an aquamedic dosing pump that is used for my Calcium reactor that has not been hooked up. the issue im having is that the unit does not turn. the motor runs and it tries, but it gets to a point where it cannot do a full revolution and then backs off. the tubing is not clogged. I was thinking that the gearbox is bad, but I know nothing of these pumps. part of me thinks it may be a safety built in in case of a clog so it dont bust the hoses or burn the motor up. can anyone tell me if this is normal for these and how to remedy the situation.

Hey Pickupman66. I've never owned one of these, but I've been looking at them with interest in buying two. I've watched some videos on UTube and eBay regarding the function of these devices, and they look simple enough. Either the motor spin speed is variable, or the tubing diameter is exchanged to provide different flow rates.

I'll take an educated guess at least to some troubleshooting steps you can take. If you are able to remove the spinning head/roller ass'y, then you can turn the pump on without it in place. If it continues to bind up without the head, then you know the issue is not related to a clogged hose, friction of the rollers on the tubing, or any other problem related to the roller head. This would indicate an issue with the motor. This can range from winding issues, or a stator or armature that has worked loose.

If the motor turns freely free without the head in place, then the motor is good and you can focus on the roller ass'y.

Other telling signs would be whether or not the motor speed remains continuous, or if it's significantly faster without the head in place.

If you can remove the roller head and get back to me, we'll take it from there.

    Good luck!

the motor turns with or without the head installed. it just acts like there is either a safety or the gearbox is stripped. it goes till about when you think it will keep rotating then it will sorta bounce back. the pump has sat Idle for a while, so the tubing may be bad.

Upon second reading, I see there's an extra word in my original post. It wasn't clear.

I should have said, "If the motor turns freely without the head in place, unimpeded, and normally--as long as it remains undisturbed--then the motor is good and you can focus on the roller ass'y.

If I understand your response, I think you're saying that the motor shaft will spin until a point, then it will stop--and this would happen with or without the roller ass'y in place. Is that right?

If it is, then your assessment of the gearbox being stripped or otherwise defective sounds accurate.
