What size pump you need depends a lot on what type of corals you plan to keep if any.

I'm not sure if it's different for nanos, but generally I would put 5x through the filter and use powerheads to add the real flow. 30x your tank size is a good medium range for in-tank flow that most coral should be OK with, you might need to bump it up for SPS though.

you dont really need the ceramic rings, foam pads are alot easier to take out and clean.

    Your on the right track.

The aquapods are set to be fully contained. The filter system it somes with is not bad however it is not great either.

The system set up as it comes is more than enough to handle a bioload equivalent with its size.

I am confussed how you plan to add a sump to this system as it is a all in one unit and without dismantling the whole thing it seems unachievable.

I would do some more research on what it is that you friend gave you and you will probably be suprised by it.
