    Hey Guys,

I am looking for a hang on the back overflow for a non drilled tank.

Here is what I am looking for:
1: I want it to be quiet! I dont mind if I have to add a standpipe or any of the other type of quieting devices.
2: I want it to do a good job of surface skimming!
3: I would like to to be of a smaller type as I do not want the eye sore of seeing it magnified in the tank.

It needs to handled about 700gph

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciative.

Also I dont mind any DIYs if onethinks I could achvie a better overflow this way.

    Thanks,
    Cole

I would look at the eshopps one. its the pf-800 which will handle enough flow for you and it is smaller looking in the aquarium. Plus IMO the u-tube style overflow boxes are easier to deal with. Eshopps: Overflow boxes

I just started my sump today and used an eshopp overflow pf-300. it's a little loud for me without any mods but sticking a piece of air tubing down through the bulkhead brings the noise down fairly well. also, the overflow piece in the tank is black and blends in with my black background.

there are lots of them out there that would fulfill your need...CPR has a nice one...think to watch is having the syphoon broken and flooding your floor

I have an Eshopps PF-300, but will be ordering a PF-1000 to install a Herbie style setup. The pf-1000 is about 3" wider, but the Herbie will allow for an almost perfectly silent operation from the overflow box AND the sump, along with being more reliable.

Anyone with any sort of overflow box, especially those with a siphon (continuous or u-tube), should really have some sort of flooding cutoff. Here is a my http://www.3reef.com/forums/i-made/diy-display-tank-overflow-return-pump-kill-switch-105442.html . It was pretty cheap and works great. I'll keep it even when I do go with the PF-1000 Herbie as a 2nd backup.

I have the eshopps pf800 on my tank. When I did the water test on it, I left the power out for 10 hours and cut the pumps back on and it kept it's syphon. I am very happy with it, it is pretty quiet.

you said a herbie setup... is that the setup where you have three pipes going to you sump? one full syphin the other just enough flow and the thrid as a backup?

Well you basically have two choices; Eshopps and CPR.

Eshopps is more noisy but less expensive, and you can make it silent yourself.

CPR is less noisy but more expensive, and perhaps a safer option if you have the extra little pump thingy to maintain the siphon.

Both will work just fine and after a little DIY they are both just as quiet as each other. I'm not really sure what you mean about having it "magnified" through the tank. As knight said, the blackness of the overflow box inside the tank makes it nearly invisible to the layman. If you don't have a background on the back of your tank then you will be fighting the eyesore of equipment until the cows come home.
