I'm just starting setup of my 75 gallon glass aquarium (that my wife was kind enough to get me for a gift). The question I had was regarding the stand. Most of my reading has indicated that for a glass aquarium, you want the stand to support across the entire frame boundaries. However, the stand my wife got me only supports the short sides of the frame, the corners, and small section along each of the long side (see picture). Is this a problem? If I use this stand, am I just setting myself up for a problem?

Hi there, when I built my stand I had the same question but got my answer from my previous tank and stand. both supported the whole tank around. The picture that you posted looks like a 55 or a 75 gal. tank. how many gals? you could always add your own support to the stand.

You need support for the whole bottom. You could put 1/4 inch ply on it and then styrene.1/4 inch will do.The only problem I can see from the photo is this will raise the bottom of the tank above the skirting. If you can take it off and add something wider or higher it will look much better.Seeing bottoms is most unattractive.Hope this helps and welcome to 3reef.Keep asking questions as there is a wealth of knowledge here.

I'm sure it will be fine as far as keeping the aquarium off of the floor. If it is a stand from a manufacturer then I'm sure they have tested the stand...

We all love to watch the setting up of a new tank. As the stand looks like it was designed specifically for your size tank, it is probably OK.

If you can deal with the work, cut a piece of plywood same size as tank bottom, and add wider skirting on base. Lots of choices same color at home depot.

Good luck & keep us posted on how all is going! 8)

What type of wood is it? If press wood (glue and sawdust), I wouldn't trust it. Regardless, I would stick the 1/4 plywood in, more surface area can never hurt.

As far as it being ok just because it came that way, I had to reinforce a garage cabinet that came apart. The manufacturer used presswood and the screws pulled out when I moved it.

That stand is a standard AGA pine stand. Its supported by the wood that goes around the edge of the stand. Doesnt seem like it will work, but it actually does. When I got my AGA 75g thats what it came with. It works fine, it does what its suppose to do. You dont have to have a solid top or styrofoam to support a tank. If the stand has a solid top, then you need the styrofoam.
