Hi, my damsels are picking on the clownfish when i first introduce them. I just set up a new 25 gallons to transfer the damsel over. However, is it ok to just put say 5 pounds of fully cured live rock from my existing nano tank? Transition from nano to new 25 gal tank is about 5 seconds - so i wouldn't expect any die-off. Nonethless; will nitrogen cycle happen?

Also - on that 25 gal - i have 2 aquaclear power filter - not sure if it's ok for a FO (WLR) tank.

    Thanks

    welcome to 3 reef thegodson

I have moved this thread to the general reef topics forum

    questions -
how big is the existing tank that has the damsels with the new clowns in? and which Damsel species are they?

I only ask this because I had 2 x YTBs and later introduced 2 clowns and the sparring only lasted 1 day and thereafter they where fine

how long has the new 25 been set up exactly - you may not get much die off from rock moved that far IMO

is the new 25 set up with water, from existing tank? as in its mature water and not all very new water - this will make transfer and acclimation much easier

The rock transfer should be fine. I have no idea about that filter.

Edit: If there are a LOT of sponges on the rock, then you could get die-off unless you transfer them under water.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

The existing tank is a nano jbj 12 gallons with ~ 15 pounds LR working for about 3 months.

The new 25 gallons has 100% new water.

The damsel is a 3 spot domino. Clowns are true percula

    just my opinion

I would consider swapping a bit of water from the new tank with some from the existing set up prior to moving the Damsels over - helps to mature the set up and reduces potential for shock

with a 12 gallon tank, I note you say Damsels meaning more than 1 and clowns meaning more than 1 - would I be right to assume you have 2 of each? in the 12 at present

in that size of tank the Damsels will probably never stop picking on the clowns

general guidance - 1 inch of fish for every 4 gallons of water in system allowing for adult size of fish - so with 2 Damsels ( depending on species again) that 12 gallon tank is possibly stocked as far as fish are concerned IMO

I actually used the plural incorrectly; i have 1 damsel (3 spot domino) and 2 clowns.

Nonetheless - I realize that the damsel had to move.

The maximum I can transfer water from my 12 gal is probably 5 gallons  , even then - seems not alot though.

The real question is: will that 25 gal tank be OK (at much as possible) for the damsel.

    THanks

OK thegodson - thanks for that clarification

You dont need 5 gallons really IMO - the 3 spot is a very hardy species and although I dont advise it, people do put them into tanks with new salt water within a week of setting them up (Not ideal but it does happen)

moving a couple of gallons of the old water to the new tank and vice versa would be good
also do you have any hagen cycle or other conditioner, just to take the edge of the changes

    Hi thegodson

have you thought about moving the clowns to the larger tank?

what species are they and are they domestic bred or wild caught?

if you moved the clowns, you could take more water from old tank with them

    IMO

Actually - i wanted the pair of clowns to be in the 12 gal because this nano is more stylish ;) The 25 gal tank is really not too fashion...

    thegodson - I understand

can I draw a funny (well I think so, and I hope you agree) analogy

when you get to my age, you dont worry about fashion, you worry about comfort
shrunk in the bath tub straight legged demims may still be fashionable - but I like a bit of fresh air especially where I live

Im just saying the damsel in the 12 - OK
the clowns in the 25 - excellent IMHO
the clowns in the 12 - ok when they are tiny , but when they get bigger - well its back to my jeans analogy
