I'm in the process of arranging my LR into a setup I'm happy with (now).

I'm thinking of setting it up so that there are 3 "islands"
    - 2 islands, made of a single larger LR each
    - 1 large main "reef"

My thinking is that I can use the 2 islands to isolate more aggressive species like zoas, and have the larger section for the rest of whatever I wind up getting.

I'm concerned about possibly getting a species that just dominates and is a pain or dangerous to frag or remove.

Am I over thinking this? Does anyone else segregate their setup like this?

Sounds like a great plan that is what my plan was when I set up my tank don't have a lot in it yet, so I hope it works.

    why are zoas "aggressive"?

i arranged my rocks with more of the equipment in mind. specifically the overflow, return pipes, and wavemakers. i arranged my islands so that they could hide the equipment. then placed all sps on rocks, lps and softies at the bottom.

From what I've been reading, it seems they can cause problems with other colonies as well as with other types like stonys, and keeping them separate seems to be the best option. Also, if there is some competition and if you need to remove zoas, apparently some can release toxic chemicals into the tank.

Again, I don't know if the separation is actually necessary. I'm really just looking for some input.

I'm new to SW, so I'm still trying to absorb as much info as possible while still planning for what I'm hoping to accomplish.

BTW, I love the pic of the sunflower zoas you have in your tank! They look really cool just those 5-6 polyps just hanging out!
