I got an order from reefcleaners about two weeks ago. I added in a baseball size clump of chateo, some red gracialaria and 5 red mangroves. A little bit of the red g. is dying off. Chateo is doing great but my mangroves seem to be dying. I have the red bottom part of the chute down in the fuge water and the green tips sticking out of the H2O. I have been misting them with RO water evey other day to prevent salt creep from building up. There is a 6500k spot light bulb from Lowe's to light the fuge area. It feels like the stalks of the mangroves are getting soft...not nice and hard like they were when I first got them. What could the prob. be? Thanks in advance guys/gals!! :)

how is your magnesium? you are right, that does sound like stress... how far above the water is the top of the seed? try to get it so just the bottom 2-3 inches is submerged. See if that helps. Magnesium can be raised with dissolved Epsom Salt

Thanks John, not too sure what my mag levels is cuz my test kit went bad and have not got a new one yet. I have dose a small amount of mag from BRS. I would say that there is about 3 or 4 inches of the bottom in the H2O. Should I try to move them directly under the light? My light is currently pointed down at the surface of the water, about 4 to 5 inches above water surface. The mangroves are sitting toward the back of my fuge and only getting light from the side of the light fixture

You definitely need to get your Magnesium up. Red Mangroves need the Magnesium to be able to pull the freshwater out of the saltwater; it's how their salt pumps work. The lower your Magnesium, the harder time they have with taking in water. I keep my Magnesium at 1400-1450 ppm. Might seem a little high, but nothing in my tanks seem to mind and the Mangroves are doing well. I don't know about the misting them part. I've had Red Mangroves for over two years and I've never misted them with fresh water. No salt creep buildup whatsoever. I didn't think Red Mangroves had that problem.

My mag shouldn't be very low. My system is fairly new. Been running about two months now. I mixed my RO/DI with reef crystals. I have dosed mag from BRS twice now which should of raised mag by 200 ppm. My guess is I'm between 1200-1400. I know I need to test but waiting for my test kit to get here in te mail. I don't have any coral and such that would use up much mag so I don't think it's that depleated yet. I dosed the mag to help fight off a small byropsis outbreak I had which is all gone now.
