i personally wouldn't bother. i was told before there is no way to test for all the different contaminates that could plague the tank. just the air that surrounds it could contain acid rain, smoke from radiators ect ect... for the small amount of money in the long run that it would save it could ruin your tank and waste much more.

Thats what I was thinking. I would say the cost/benefit wouldn't be worth trying.

If those dunes ever saw any motor sports then I'd say it's contaminated.

Those dunes see a ton of motor sports. I wouldn't bother, sand isn't that expensive compared to unforeseen problems you could have down the road. Are you from Eastern Idaho? What part?

Plus they probably aren't calcium based, even beach sand sometimes isn't. I considered getting some from Siesta Key (besides finding out it's illegal) the sand is quartz based, then thought I could use some of the local limestone rock but here in FL it's full of phosphate, which we are famous for, Mark Twain listed FL's phosphate as one of the country's great resources. So yeah buying it is best.

go with aragonite for many reasons mentioned above... not to mention, it is what reefs are made of.

Hey I live in Idaho Falls, my ex-inlaws live in Rigby though. Do you know many reefers in our area? I would be interested to meet people to trade frags with or buy. PM me if you know of any one or need some soft corals.
