If my daylights are on for 8 or more hours, things bleach, algae grows, growth starts going in reverse...

12 hours of daylights would kill my tank.

I currently run daylights for about 7 hours and actinics for 11.5. I've got around 2 hours of actinics on either side of the daylights.

Actinic may be necessary for some corals, I'd be interested in seeing research though if someone has references. However, from what I've read, this seems to be based more on speculation though.

The good thing about broad spectrum bulbs, such as 10K bulbs, is most seem to have peaks around the actinic range. So, if it's necessary, a typical 10K will provide it anyway. On the flipside, if other spectrums are required, an actinic will not necessarily provide them, the broader band bulb probably will.
