Please see the picture and see if they look good or not. Owner says some are Fiji and some were bought from Drs Foster/Smith(LiveAquaria).

Does the base rock serve any positive purposes to the water quality except to stack up live rocks?

yes it will all become live rock and become the filter for your tank, use the 2.50 rock to seed the base rock you will add to your system....base rock on bottom and your 2.50 rock on top

Babyduke, the base will rock go live after a few weeks. Save your money for some really nice live rock and put it in the tank after you've got all the base rock you need. It's a slower way to go but you'll save some serious cash.

I dont know where you can get LR for $2.50 a pound...at least in my area. My LFS sells it for $6/lb. On sale now for $4.99

However that tank looks NASTY....might have a lot of crap that comes with it

2.50 is cheap for any LR :p Also, there is quite a bit of coraline on there, but I'd probably nuke it if I was buying it.. maybe scrape of the coraline and dump the shaving in your tank.

You don't HAVE to put any LR in a tank. You can use all base rock if you want. Then start your tank with a peice of shrimp or a yellow tail damsel to start your cycle and all the rock will become alive with time. A lot cheaper that way and you know what is going in your tank... no worries about horrible hitch hikers on nasty LR.

I'd offer him less than $2 a pound then nuke it. Offer a buck a pound and see what he says.
