you really should wear gloves whenever you're messing with your urchin, or anything in the tank for that matter.

i learned this the hard way the other day when my 2" wide emerald crab decided to clamp onto my finger. so i purchased a box of powder free vinyl gloves from ambitex as i would rather not have anything in my tank injure me moving forward (i.e. anemone sting, urchin sting, fish attack etc). i double up the gloves when i use em. works well. water gets into them obviously but it helped me get the detritus away from my anemone without my forearm going numb.

I have a suggestion for your urchin spine stabbed finger. Soak your finger in hydrogen peroxide then in vinegar. The hydrogen peroxide will kill any living tissue in the spine tip as well as remove some of your tissue around the stem. Then soak your finger in vinegar for about 20 minutes. Vinegar is often used w/ jellyfish stings because of how it reacts with the stinging cells. The vinegar will also dissolve the organics of the spine.

If that doesn't work cut your finger off.

But really...if it gets worse go there. Tell them exactly what species of urchin spine you have in your finger. If you start seeing red streaks and or a red rash go to the hospital asap. If the infection reaches your heart you may have a serious problem on your hands.
