I have been getting mixed ideas on UV sterilizers and wanted to ask if you guys thought it was worth the money? I am debating if I should get one even if I am running a wet/dry sump, skimmer, and fuge.

    Thanks.

I run a UV sterilizer. I know that many people feel they are not necessary, but I don't think I would have a tank without one. My tank is healthy and my water is very clear.

Unless I was keeping some livestock that was somehow particularly susceptible to dsease or infections, or maybe if I was breeding fish or something, I don't see the need to run one otherwise. Just more things to upkeep, more electricity used, more bulbs to replace etc.
I think if you keep a healthy clean tank you shouldn't need to run UV.

Not for a reef system, they inactivate necessary parts of the food chain. I swear by them for a heavily stocked fish only system but not in a reef where you have so many different forms of life, from microscopic to large that all depend on smaller life for food.
