Whoa. Let's stick to fish. I was not saying you are not a compassionate person. I was just referring to the attitude toward fish.

One experience I have had is diving in a public aquarium - two actually- The living seas at EPCOT, and a shark exhibit at a small aquarium in CT - The Maritime Center in Norwalk. I did not notice it so much in the living seas, because it is so big, but in the Maritime Center, where the water volume was ~ 100k gallons, you really really noticed it when someone banged on the windows of the tank. The seemingly small knock on the glass was majorly amplified underwater, a wrapping of the knuckles made a signficant boom boom boom. Imagine the sound it would make in the smaller, thin glassed, tanks we all have. So compassion aside, having experienced this first hand, I try not to tap on the glass too much. :)

    It always amazes me :(

Bruce, who is one of the youngest and certainly one of the nicest people on this discussion board asks a simple question. Not a difficult one, just an idea. Not one that engenders thoughts of compassion, war, or any other bloody thing and yet it seems that we all want to simply ignore the question that was asked and sprout off at each other. Sad day indeed. We should all be ashamed.

    IMO

They can hear the pumps but i belive that it does not directly affect them in any way. If it was a pain to them and caused the irritation I belive that we would see it, eg. fish swimming around like crazy as we would if there were constant loud noises. Fish can live in an aquarium for many many years, and at least the fish is in a similar home to where it lives eg coral and rock in our tanks. If we keep our tanks well then we keep our fish well, and they are better off in one of our tanks than in a 5 gallon LFS tank with glass walls. If you think that pumps and noises are inhane to fish then give up fish keeping.

    Cheers,

    Breed
