I hope I did'nt come across as being rude, I just wanted to know if there were any specific reasons why you thought they were above the rest. Does it cut the cleaning time in half, ect?

It didn't. I said the same thing to Tangster, and he said wait till you use it. I only purchased it because I trusted what he said. My tank cleaning is one swipe. Plus just like Inwall said, when you get into think glass then the exotic magnets get expensive.

I'm just sitting back laughing because that is exactly what I used to say.

Still slightly overpriced in my opinion. You could DIY one of those with some rare earth magnets and all is well, for quite a bit cheaper. But alot of people don't enjoy DIY stuff anymore. My first salt aquarium was entirely DIY as far as structure went except for the actual tank. I don't trust myself enough to build a display tank, but the sump was a 20g with self cut acrylic siliconed in place to hold the biostuff along with some other little bits and pieces. All plumbing and fittings were bought at Home Depot. Stand built out of Oak Ply and solid Oak. Etc etc. That setup is sold though, it was a small one. 29g display tank with a 20g sump...yeah. Weird combo.

Anyways, I guess the bigger the tank where you actually need something powerful like that, the higher all prices are going to be. The size range of a tank will also depict the size of your money loss. The bigger the tank, the more money you loose (now don't get onto me about this, I know there are exceptions and stuff, just in general though)

If you need it, buy it. To each his own.

    Here's a tip on neodymium rare-earth magnets

Hard drives - particularly the older SCSI drives have giant neodymium rare-earth magnets in them. I take them out and use them as stud finders (they hang from the nails - don't leave a single mark).

I don't see any reason you couldn't fashion one of these cleaners yourself. You can buy these older bigger drives on ebay used - better than the landfill if you ask me.

FYI - the magnets break easy and are TOXIC. Do NOT ingest or let kids play with them. Additionally, they are so strong they can easily break a baby's finger when they slam together. I use gloves to take them out and put them in a bag (the bag doesn't hinder the attraction at all).

Be careful with them - but they are rather useful.

Hey Otty, Since you have one..

So the longer you go betweeen using a mag cleaner the algea goes through stages. It starts off as the easily removed brown stuff then eventually turns into Coraline if you go too long in between. Now I suspect you never let that happen, but have you ever tried it on Coraline Aglea dots that appear on the front and sides ?

    Does it remove them ?

I was thinking the same thing myself, but then I remembered playing with them ini the lab. Boy those are strong magnets, I would almost be afraid that the force would be TOO great and slam together against the glass.

But certainly you could add replaceable felt pads to them.

    Cheers

guess what they don't even float.
a box of razor blades(and a scraper they screw into) is the best buy.
