So when I kept a glass open top tank I had my halide probably 6-7 inches ontop of the water and had great growth. Currently in my 40g reef i have my 150W Pheonix 14k halide (Fishneedit.com fixture) about 9.5" from the top of the tank/center brace. I also fill the water to within about a half inch from the top of the tank. If i continute to lower my halide will I have any heat issues with warping the center brace or lessening its strength?

~9" is a decent height, try it and pay close attention for a day or so to see if you notice any discoloration of the acrylic. You should be fine, however.

Don't halide and T5 combo fixtures often use the flimsy plastic to cover the T5s, usually very close to the hailde, without issue....? I figure heat radiates in more directions when compared to the light output. I assume your tank would be more resistant...
