Hey guys I bought a setup with a asm mini g skimmer and it would turn off every once in awhile, maybe about once a day, but if i just unplug it for a few minutes and plug it back it back in it would be fine again. After a few days of that and messing around with the skimmer I finally got it to not turn off and pull good skimmate. The cup started to get full so I emptied it and ever since then the skimmer would shut off again, but more frequently. I took a look at the impeller and it was fine so I put it back together, ever since then it shuts off within 10 seconds of turning on. Whats wrong with the pump? Do I need to get a new pump? Or should I just upgrade to a whole new skimmer while I'm at it?

Sounds like it was having a heat issue of some sort. Try taking it all apart and running it in a bucket of vinegar. If that doesnt work, you'll probably need a new one.

I have the same problem with mine...my personal feeling is that its just a piece of junk. I thought at first that maybe the pump was getting air locked or something like that. I would shake it and it would start working again. I ll try the vinegar treatment with mine and see if that helps, but I'm guessing that i ll be buying something new rather soon. Reef octopus perhaps??? Good thing i found a hobby i can spend all my money on!!! LOL

I just put it in some vinegar, hopefully it'll work better. Right before I put it in I tried to run the pump again and this time it turned off within 2 seconds, every time I.plugged it in again.

Im looking too!! I just put out $400 + this weekend on livestock and a few needed items. Gently used stuff that is actually good seems to be a bit difficult to come by! Good luck... post if the vinegar works or not!

I have a G-2 that was doing the same thing, I ended up buying a new pump for it, now it works great. I will have to try the vinegar thing with the old pump and see if it works.
