Wouldn't it be better to split the overflow than to stem some of the flow from my return? I will only have 310gph going back to the tank and I worry that splitting it will make it too weak.

You're right, I worded it poorly! Don't split the return pump, split the overflow into your fuge and sump, you'll prob only want about 20% of the flow going to the fuge so ya can drop that part down and use the ball valve to control it!

    Oh and great deal

And I wouldn't scrub it too much, just gonna get nasty soon anyways

That's what I was thinking. I'll probably get a Y connector (rather than a T) with a ball valve after the split to control the flow to the fuge.

exactly..T or Y or whatever...and I have mine barley moving...I'm going to say as low as 5%, ime, no noticeable head loss from the pump..as soon as I seen it start to trickle over the baffle..that's it..the fuge is not a high flow area...pretty slow and funky actually....if ya want it to work efficiently. 8)
    ..stanky..yes, that's the word. :) lol

Alright- here is my next question. I'm looking at the Ecotech MP's and was curious what I would need for my tank. I have softies, LPS, and SPS.

    Would I need 2 mp10's, just one mp40, or a combination?

If you can afford it get 2 and use the Eco-Smart functions. You will get better flow through the tank and fewer dead spots.

Well, I just found a used MP10 for $110. I am picking it up tomorrow night. Now to just find another one. Should I get an MP40 or will another MP10 work?

    score !
I'd say either..if your buying used just get your best bargain...then adjust them to suit your needs...match it if ya can..but I don't believe you will have any issue either way, especially if it has the adjust feature..nice grab..8)
