I have an N900. It doesn't have 3G via AT&T; I can deal with that. It required overclocking to run smoothly; I dealt with that. It doesn't have nearly any applications; I couldn't care less.

But the *(&% thing doesn't work with my new car's bluetooth. It just absolutely won't connect past the first time. I can't deal with this, at all.

I read a bunch of people had this problem, and none could fix it. The phone is going to end up unsupported, since Nokia are stupid -------- and don't want to support their product for any decent period of time. Heck, the N900 isn't even getting Meego! Meego came out 7 months after they released this phone. Un-freaking-believable, but I'm jumping ship now. No reason to stay on the boat if it's already sinking (mostly sunken already lol).

So, I'm done with this nonsense. I want a good phone. But it needs to support AT&T (850 + 1900 mhz), and I refuse to buy another Apple (or Nokia, after this "sell and ditch platform within 6 months" insanity) phone unless they change their stupid policies regarding self upload of applications to the phone, without The-Almighty-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named 's approval. (If you can't take the hint, this basically means Android. WinPhone7 is ok too, but ugh, M$...)

Thanks for reading my total venting about this. Anyone have a suggestion for a good, non-Apple phone that will do 3G on AT&T?

That is one of the reasons that I left AT&T.

Honestly, I have ordered my last 6 phones from the manufacturer direct. You can normally find a much better phone that way.
    Motorola is my favorite.

Running a DroidX on Verizon now. Much happier.

Heh, only two of the companies that design cell phones are American, and they're Apple and Motorola. Look where all the rest (of the ones that make smartphones) are from. Sony Ericsson, HTC, Samsung, LG, all Asian. Nokia is Finnish (with the largest global phone marketshare, too).

I wouldn't blame the makers so much as I would the carriers. Every one is on a different frequency, so you can't get a single phone and switch between carriers as you please. Europe doesn't have the problem we do with phone models, at all. They only have GSM, pretty much only at 3 frequencies (900, 1800, 1900). We have CDMA, TDMA, and GSM networks, so any given carrier's phone is going to work only with that carrier (since there's only 4 big ones).

It's not like Verizon or Sprint has any less of a lock on you. They have more phone options (like 2 more each), but they both have phones that won't work with the other carriers. Plus, if you go out of country with their phones, you won't get service nearly anywhere, while AT&T phones will actually work through most of Europe/Asia/MidEast. So, in a way, they're more locked down. Plus, Motorola decided to put a kill switch in the DroidX so you can't install your own firmware on the phone. Scumbags.

As for me, I'm stuck with AT&T. Family plan is much cheaper than buying my own monthly plan.

I do agree that it would be a much better system to have a standard carrier signal. Unfortunately, I don't ever see it happening here.

I did like the idea of having a GSM phone, and most of mine were, but I never once used it. When I do travel overseas, it is normally in restricted areas where I am unable to use a standard phone anyways.

As for the kill switch.... I can't blame them. It is a stupidly expensive phone and I can only imagine the amount of warranty requests they would be getting if everyone was out there trying to hack the firmware. Not that we don't do it anyways, but there would be a lot more of us if not for this safeguard.

your stuck with the rules they make... just go with Apple, at least you can jailbreak them now and its legal (according to the federal government)... but it still voids the warranty if Apple finds out. jailbreaking lets you put literally whatever you want on the phone though.

for example, you could download my "unofficial" Reef Angel app if your jailbroken.

I don't know anything about AT&T, except that I used to have it and it was horrible lol but that was awhile ago. However, someone above mentioned Samsung and I totally say go with Samsung. They make really nice phones that last! I've found Motorola to make horrible phones. Every one I've had has died in less than a year.

I have a Samsung Vibrant and the quality is amazing (of course you get what you pay for).
