Well i will chime in on this one. I have had verizon cells since well verizon came out with a cell service. At first they were amazing and the phones were pretty solid. Before i left verizon cause of the we don't care attitude of customer service i had gone through 7 phones and my wife 5. You might ask well are you rough on them or maybe you like a new phone. Well while i love new tech the phones were all horrible didn't matter if it was a moto or samsung or crack berry. not sure if it was verizon horrible 3g but capped speed but they were slow and broke so often. Now on to the present after having every company out there Apple truely is king. I have had an Iphone for about 2 yrs now and its a beast. does everything i want or need and extremely responsive. while att service might not be the best they have a phone that last and works very well.

I'm not switching away from AT&T, nasek. I happen to live in suburban NJ, so I get really good, fast service, unlike people in the cities (where the "AT&T service sucks" mentality comes from, because they overloaded their network with smartphones and don't have enough towers to handle the data usage). But I won't buy an Apple product until they change from their policies that are blatantly hostile towards users and developers.

Also, I realize I could just jailbreak an iPhone. But that's not how capitalism works. If you buy the phone, it doesn't matter if you jailbreak; it's still a validation of their business model. The point of capitalism is that they change once they see their model doesn't work, which they never see if you buy then jailbreak. It's also a less-than-ideal solution from the usability perspective, as you don't get iOS updates once you jailbreak.

Haha, it's partially a rant about phone brands, part rant about phone companies, and part "What AT&T capable phone should I get?".

I think I might go with a Samsung Captivate.

This doesn't really help your phone issue, but the AT&T sucks mentality goes farther than just the cities that have overloaded AT&T data networks. I have an iPad and travel frequently, and my Verizon phone always has service, 3G always seems to be available. When I look at my iPad it either has no signal, or is using Edge instead of 3G. The entire week I was in New Mexico and Texas the iPad was unusable and I had to break out my laptop with Verizon 3G card. When I hit major cities, that was the only time the iPad was usable. Traveling through Kentucky, iPad had Edge only. I could go on all day.

Well, you can look at the AT&T coverage map that Verizon uses on their commercials and see they don't have 3G coverage everywhere; not even close. Even look at the map on their website; the 3G coverage is really regional and in bigger areas, while the other areas are 2G only.

I live in suburban New Jersey, though, so anywhere within 100 miles of me has 3G coverage. I hardly travel outside this area, and by hardly, I mean never.

I ended up getting a Samsung Captivate, and like it a lot so far.

Yay AT&T upgrade policy, too. 300 for the upgrade, plus 100 extra for being the line with the most usage. 99 is cheap for this phone lol.
