The one I was using was a float valve, and from how I understand it works is theres a magnet in the float itself that sits around a rod, and when the water level drops the magnet pulls against the connector inside the rod and creates a closed circuit. The problem was the when the float went back up the magnet continued to pull against the rod and therefore would not shut off. I looked at the Tunze system your talking about and it looks nice. The only way I would pay that much for a top off is for the added peace of mind. With the JBJ I know it has 2 sensors, one in the sump, and a fail safe if your reservoir level gets too low.

I don't really know what kind of sensor is in the JBJ, so as far as I can tell, you didn't answer the question ;D;D;D:p:p:p just messin

About the Tunze, I agree. The peace of mind is why I paid that price. I remember when I first started and folks told me to buy the right thing the first time... In my mind, this is that advise :)

+1, I have the same setup and love it. It's been working flawlessly for the past year for me now.

yes it does. the pump will shut off if the reservoir goes dry.

I wipe off the laser lens every few months to keep coraline from growing.

it also comes with a 'backup' float sensor. This thing doesn't check if it's too low, it checks if it's too high. So if anything breaks in such a way that causes the pump to run, this backup will shut it off to avoid an overflow situation. pretty neat. also, if you dunk your hand in the tank too far, it will beep at you bc of the risen water level (I don't have a sump, I run this on the DT) :)
