hey reefers, having some problems with cyanobacteria. Its growing like crazy in my tank. I have reduced lighting to seven hours, only ro/do water, and reduced feeding to every other day. I brush it off the rock about everyday with a toothbrush and siphon it off the sand with weekly water changes but it continues to grow like crazy everyday. I feed mysis only. considering a phosban reactor. any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    happy reefing

Do you test for phosphates?Cyano is a result of excess nutrients,so you're on the right track to fix it,i've also found a good cuc and increased flow helps quite a bit as well.

Edit-adding gfo can really help in lowering phosphate levels also.

i was told gfo has adverse effects on clams, which i have a few and would like to get more. I currently do not test for phosphates. I have to 1050 gph powerheads in my 55 and was considering 2 more little guys to help

Yeah, adding another one or 2 would help take care of any "dead spots" and improve overall flow. But i haven't heard that about gfo and clams, maybe someone with some clam experience will chime in on this.
