I have never seen anyone use screen. There might be a reason, Screen has a nasty odor and taste, yes taste. Salt creep will probably stick to it like mad. If you are goin to go all that effort, just make a barrier out of acrylic. It looks good and is safe and easy to work with.

lol, glad theres people like you to shoot down my great ideas reefer. lol. but i never thought of those sort of things. youre right about salt creep, would get pretty ugly after a while, and more work to keep it clean. and cant say ive ever sat down to a bowl of door screen. :) but thnx for the advice and raisingthese concerns, time for this mad scientist to go back to the drawing board. K+

This is what I did to my eggcrate to get more light into my tank. I just used a pair of wire cutters and snipped away, then used blunt nosed pliers to break away leftovers.

so many different possibilities. i think i will go this way, but open up all below the lights. should still be strong enough it doesnt sag.

Are you going to place anything on top of the eggcrate? Eggcrate itself is very light and won't sag on its own weight. :)

I think screen (like in a screen door) can come in different forms - nylon and metal. The metal one might be susceptible to rust(?). Not sure. The nylon kind should be safe.

I wouldn't be concerned about salt creep here anymore than I would be with the egg crate. Either can be rinsed off. Salt creep rinses away very easily...

I have been thinking of some way to make a side barrier around tank to replace this egg crate...

lol, stop changing my mind. lol. its easily done. i think the screen would alot nicer and neater. so what im gonna do, is try the screen, velcroed down all around , and see how it goes. and will report back. and the whole reason for this thread was the suicidal carpenters wrasse. well , looks like hes gonna make it. after 24 hours holed up, hes swimmng around the tank. im surprised tho, he was out behind te tank for close to 5 mins. im glad he made it because i think hes changing colors, orange to adult yellow. hes a fav of mine.gonna name him either lucky or stupid.
