Can of compressed air to blow out the fan is a good thing ..

The drive may need to be partitioned yet if it isn't showing in "My Computer"

Not from the factory, AFAIK. Any brand new disk needs to be formatted the first time it is plugged in. I've literally never seen a hard drive formatted from the factory, and I have 8 in my computer, all bought aftermarket, 3 externals, and another 12 sitting in a pile over that way.

First, plug in the disk. Let windows say it recognizes the disk, then follow below.

Start > Right click computer > click manage. Say yes to any security dialog boxes. Click "disk management" in the left part of the window. In the center dialog, find the disk that shows "X GB Unallocated" in a box across the whole disk, right click and hit "New Simple Volume". Make sure the "Volume size in MB" matches the "maximum disk space in MB". Hit next twice. It'll ask you what file system, make sure it's NTFS, change the "volume name" to whatever you want, hit next and then finish.

It'll take a minute or two, then your disk will be ready and have a drive letter assigned. You can then access it normally through computer/my computer or Autoplay (the dialog that pops up when you first plug it in).

Thank you I had not thought of that, cleaning the fan go figure.
It is showing in " My Computer" but will not let me go any further.

    Will give it a try.

Do I feel like the newbie or what.

    Thanks
