    I use simple gravity fed ATO's on all my setups, but I have a place/room to do this that a lot of people don't.

    Regardless of what you use I would suggest never having more water in your reservoir than is needed for a couple of days. Even with fail safes and backups I've seen some ATO's fail. If you don't have too much water in the reservoir then you can't overly dilute your system SG and "nuke" it.
