I'm confused on why that would not be a good idea, if you have a float switch in the tank and lets say for some reason the overflow to the sump stoped flowing it would shut off the return pump so that it would not over flow the main tank.

How would the over flow get clogged, unless you have a u-tube over flow system, then it would make a little sense, but then again, gravity should take its course.

I do have a u tube overflow , if a snail or something else would clog the tube there is a chance of it stopping, is there something wrong with a u tube overflow

Depending on your tank size, have looked into having two u-tube over flow boxes or just get it drilled and have a mega flow ?

If your really concerned about it overflowing then have it drilled. If not just make sure it fail-proof and when the power goes out it starts back up when the power returns. The only reason why I think that device might work for so your pump does not run dry.
