My 29gal nano(will be fish & corals) is 6 weeks old. Water tests great, 3 small fish doing well, snails, crabs looking great. Water is clear except for white specks floating around. I have been doing water changes, etc. I am considering purchasing a Marineland Magnum 350 Canister filter. I would use it on an as needed basis to clear up (polish) water as needed. Does this make sense?? What is the general exprience with this filter?? Thanks for any replies. SJ

No experience of that particualar brand of filter

I do have experience with the exact technique you are considering

the main thing is to ensure you clean the filter media each time you use it
and then leave it out to dry
that way you avoid the problem of the filter media becoming biological and then die off etc when flow stops only to foul the water when its started again

in addition to filter floss, filter mattingm, I ran carbon at this time also

    my method is
start the cannister and then use the return end to power clean over the rock and behind the reef
the water gets very cloudy when I do this
then I leave the cannister on for the rest of the day, and periodically just use the return hose to get particles back into the water column again

been doing this for about 6- 8 weeks now and each week I do it, I get less and less cloudy water when doing the power cleaning, thus I know it is removing a lot of the detritus etc from the tank
when I finished - I unhook, empty the water into a bucket, allow it to settle and then pour that back into DT
remove filter matting and rinse in warm water, rinse bag of carbon
and then leave them hung outside for a week, so they are perfectly clean and dry for the next weekend.

once you have done this a few times, you may find you only need to run it once per month or so, in order to maintain the water clarity you are targetting

the carbon helps to give the water a nice crystal clear look also
