I was doing a much needed water change this morning and when I opened my canister filter, I got the surprise of my life:eek: I found what appears to be baby brittle stars in the canister. I have a large brittle star that I have had for apprroximatly six yrs. My question is are brittle stars asexual or do they need a mate. I have no idea where these little guys came from:confused:I have not purchased any live rock or corals on rock for a long time. If they survive a little longer I am going to the LFS and see if I can work a trade.

more then likely they're sand brittle stars, if they aren't tan colored then maybe babies. to answer you question i don't think starfish are asexual, possibly you get two if they get cut in half.

I have bought live rock that had what looked like 50 or so of them hiding in the holes in the rock. When I added the rock to my tank I saw them move around and have rarely seen them since then.

    Do they look like these:

The picture is from Inwall...I had found some in my tanks and thought they were brittle stars also, so he sent me a picture and I was able to ID them as these...ministars!

They will not get bigger then what they are...they are really good for your tank and the breed well (as you can guess!)
