I have a 120 gal tank it is 48x24x24 and I have (2) 250 WATT HQI MH lamps and (4) 45 w compact flourescent atinics and the tank is really bright. I had the same 4 foot space limitation so I went with the 120 ;D

Ive read that the aquatinics and ati t5 lights are excellent. But in your case I would go metal halides, with t5/vho actinic supplementation. And like omard said buy yourself a good skimmer (euroreef, deltec, bubble king, Precision Marine etc..)

I like mine, and they put out plenty of light. Ive read that the aquatnics and ati fixtures are much better. So in a 120 you'll probably be ok.But Mhs will be fine too.

Heres an older picture of my tank with the lights very far away.(now there sitting close to surface of tank)

I think there's something inherently sexy about a rimless tank. I have a link from reefguru for glasscages.com, and they manufacture in many standard sizes, or to your specs. I might get one of these for my next tank--much, much later of course. (In case my wife is reading) ;D

if your going with t5's you want as shallow as possible.since you want it 4 ft by 24 inches the shallowest tank would be a 75 gallon.it would be 48 x 24x 18 inches deep.you could run 4 54 watt t5's for softies or 6 bulbs for everything else.
