I used a mag 7 for a 75 gal and it was fine. I think as long as you have good flow inside the DT with your powerheads you should be ok. Im a fan of reef crystals. I think they have a good balance of all the trace elements needed and it seems consistent from batch to batch. What ever you decide to go with for salt, i would stick with it long term. Im sure you will get others to chime in on both issues.

If you haven't bought a pump yet and are going to, I recommend the Jebao DC series. I have the 9000 for my 55g which will outrun my overflow if I open it all the way up and that is with 12'6" head pressure. As for the salt, I agree you should stick with whatever you choose. You definitely want some type of reef/coral blend. Myself I use RedSea Coral Pro which does well for my coral, I tried to switch to Seachem reef salt and won't make that mistake again. So my recommendation is to not use that one.

+1 for jebao dc pumps. And get reefcrystals. Cheap and reliable.

The hood i built is pretty heavy. Id guess it weighs maybe 20 or 30 pounds. Is that too heavy to sit on top of the tank? or should i rig up some kind of support system to distribute the weight onto the stand?

holy hood batman! lol - I can't answer about the weight because I am carpentry as well as plumbing impaired but I did want to comment that your stand and hood look really nice and well built. There are many outstanding carpenters on the site so hopefully they can chime in on the weight question.
