    If you are worried about paint scratching, you could always tape a mylar aquarium background to the back of your tank. Then you can see what both black and blue actually make your tank look like and you can change them very easily, as opposed to repainting. They sell them at Petsmart by the sq. ft. and are double sided in black and blue. I picked blue for my tank and it works great.

    IME this stuff is hard to keep attached to a tank housing saltwater

    i would look for a very deep dark blue paint. instead of black. maybe with a hint of green in it. like the deep ocean. that would be very nice. keep in mind black absorbs your light

    1) Wet sand the back with 800 grit on a sanding block with water.

    2) Wipe down really well with denatured alcohol and a clean rag. Allow to dry.

    3) Back glass should be hazy, if not keep sanding.

    4) Mask off the rest of tank, because over spray is a very bad thing.

    5) Paint and enjoy.
