I was thinking the other day about if something happened to my tank with all my corals in it and how much that would suck if I lost all of them. So I had the idea to frag some things and put them in my other tank so if I lost everything in one tank I have frags of it in another. Kind of like a backup just in case. Has anyone done this type of thing before? Now I don't have any big pieces of anything yet so I cant really frag everything but so far I have fragged some zoas and already moved them. Just curious if anyone has done this before. Maybe I'm being too cautious or I'm just really bored lol but it's something to do

I like the idea, there have been too many system crashes lately to think it'll never happen to me. I say if you have the space and equipment then go for it.

+1 if you have the extra space I would go for it
fragging and growing and getting 2nd and 3 generation frags are a interesting branch of the hobby in their own right, and I agree , having a inch or 2 frag of a colony that gets a problem can prevent it becoming totally lost

Lots of people do this with frag tanks that are separated, or whole other display tanks, or even in friends' or local club members' tanks. I think it's a good idea if you can swing it. I wouldn't frag your stuff when it's too small though, let it grow out a little bit so you're not making 1/4" frags.

Trade out with a friend on the condition that you can get a frag back if anything ever happens to your tank. Everyone wins!

i think its a great idea. i mean we really never know if a tank is going to come down with a disease or a bad power outage so if you have a small frag tank i think its worth it, im actually getting a 10 gallon soon and im thinking of making that my frag tank just for simple softies and zoas and shrooms.

This very idea, about a year ago saved me from having a total loss when my tank got cooked from a bad heater sticking on.

It's a great idea, but nearly doubles your investment. You'd need a fully equivalent second tank. Lights, skimmer, etc.

The friend idea is a good backup.

If you're setting up a tank just for these purposes then yeah it definitely is a large extra expenditure. A lot of people seem to have secondary or frag tanks though (aren't we all addicted to some extent? :) ). So it would make sense to take insurance into consideration if you have that available, or do the friend/club member trade/insurance bit!
