I come home tonight and notice that my hydno has fallen from the rock that it was carefully placed (away from all other corals). I go to pick it up and it is on my LARGE ACAN COLONY....with thousands of stingers all over my acan! I can not tell how much damage it has done to the acan...but this little $25 coral has now wiped out several hundred dollars worth of corals.

I knew that hydno are VERY Aggressive and had placed it well enough away from any other coral (actually was using it to control my anthelia spread on one spot). But what I did not realize was how long the stingers can go. It wiped out my Red Planet Acro a few months back. Now this.....

I have banished the hydno to a corner in the tank and this weekend it is going back to the LFS...or else in the trash!

just joking...I would never throw something alive away. Just very frustrated! He is alone in the corner of my tank very angry still....tenticles all over the place.

I am going to see if one of my friends will take it and if not then I will take it to the LFS. Unfortunately I have other tanks but none of them with strong enough lights for it. I actually love the coral. One of my brightest corals in my tank....however it keeps attacking my other stuff and killing them. Boy do those sweepers go far!!!

;D LOL.....I have more tanks than you can imagine. I have just taken down 2 tanks...so I am only down to my 135g reef, 29g mantis and 72g FOWLR tank. IF, IF I was to set up a tank I would do a clam only tank...but again I need to get my mansion first

I am bummed...my acan where it was stung are all brown and gooey! I guess I need to frag that section off but I have never fragged an acan lord before! I hear you will loose many when you frag...so not sure what to do . I have a dremel but am wary to use in on this coral.

Anyone frag an acan before....do you think it will come back or should I frag it. If I frag it do I follow the outline of the healthy polyps?

Here is a picture of the acan

It is an awful lot to loose...but if I dont frag it....it will probably get worse?

I know what your feeling, cause once one starts getting burnt they seem to not stop. I had a huge yuma that we had just gotten and it did not like where we put him. So overnight (as always) he floated around the tank and found a spot on my orange blasto's and it burnt them all in one big cover. over $100 gone. I would guess that even after you move them to safety they are still being attacked, maybe by some of the chemical is still on them and attacking.

Youch, that hurts and I can definitely understand your frustration!
I guess, atleast you can learn something from this in that you now know how damaging this species of coral can be as well as the length of the sweeper tentacles, to place this coral out of harms way.
