I have a 33 and 44g rubbermaid brute cans that i use to store my ro water. my 33g has developed a nasty smell now i've rinsed it out several times but keeps coming back after a few weeks i've heard of using bleach or baking soda as there as been a bacteria outbreak. what is the best way to solve this? thanks in advance.

I would just buy a new one honestly. They are cheap enough, doesn't seem like it would be worth the effort.

The idea crossed my mind of spending another 30 on a new one but what if it happens to the new one in 3 months then i just add another one to the yard work collection.

I agree buy a new one. Sometimes the odor could be from not drying them and water sitting

storing them with a power head may solve this problem and prevent the water from going stagnate.

When i rinse out i always dry the best i can on the spot and then fill back up with more ro water and always keep a power head going. as said before takes a few weeks to come back i've also let it sit dry for 3-5 days same result.

is your ro filter worn out?

do you cover your water with a top?

where do you store your water?

do you have the same problem with saltwater?

The ro/di unit fills the 44g then i transfer to the 32g which I make the sw. i let it sit 48 hours before using. the membrane was just replaced 6weeks ago and the inline tds reads 1 going into the di and 0 ont he out. i store both in my basement. I do have lids but i only use them to cover half the opening. I will sometimes leave the ro in the 32 a few days as time is an issue sometimes but i do the same with the 44g which is only used for ro no sw. hope this helps. also i talked to the gusy at thefiterguys.biz and they said def a bacteria issue rinse with bleach and then baking soda but didn't tell me how much of each.

i think the bacteria may be in your basement so cleaning the tub won't do much, im guessing it is high in humidity like most reefers homes.

could be, we do have a nice size wood burner in the basement not in the same room as the tubs tho. also in the same room i do have a dehumidifer but only runs in the summer, so should be starting to crank that baby up soon. i think i may just have to have a reg schedule on cleaning that out along with the other maint. for the tank. thanks for your input.
