hi,i have had this wrasse since it was 1/2 in ,now about 3 in.had him about 1.5 yrs.
never a problem with him until last week,i recently got an elegance coral,i see him picking at it.i have other corals, kenyas, palys, zoos,he has never touched them. he eats flakes, brine and mysis, damm near anything.he picks at the elegance constantly, watched him,he wont stop.i have a small torch coral also, never seen him pic at it?
i was concerned so i id,d him as - The Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse is found on finging reefs rich in corals. Adults are associated with stony corals, on which the Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse feeds.
Husbandry: The Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse is not compatible with a reef tank. It will feed on large and small polyped stony coral polyps. It has been reported to eat Aiptasia. This wrasse may even pick at zoanthid colonies. It should be offered Mysid or live brine shrimp to encourage it to feed on aquarium fare.

if i want my elegance coral to survive?does he have to go?

ty in advance for any ideas.

Yeah it is for sure a yellowtail cleaner wrasse. From what I have read, that as juveniles they are more geared towards cleaning and when they are adults their diet switches which can consist of corals unfortunately. I would say your best bet is to either take him to a LFS, move your elegance coral to another tank if possible, or get rid of your elegance coral. Sounds like he is going to keep picking on it until there is nothing left and after that may turn to other things like polyps :-/

Diproctacanthus xanthurus (yellowtail tubelip); not really a "cleaner" wrasses.

As a juvi, their diet consists of ectoparasites from other small fish. As an adult, they are obligate corallivores; they only eat SPS polyps.

ah good to hear! Sorry you couldn't keep him but at least you found him a good home. On the upside you can now begin researching a replacement fish maybe;D
