Hi. I want to buy a bag of that supposedly live sand just to add a little more depth to my substrate. I would rather just buy dry sand, but I want the substrate to match my existing substrate, and I can't find anything matching in a dry version. I think this is the type I had. I wouldn't mind adding a pure black sand, but the only one I could find is that tahitian moon stuff. I'm pretty sure this stuff I already have is basically black aragonite. At least, my buffering level is always really high. I read a few people who said that tahitian moon is basically obsidian or something of the sort, it doesn't help buffer the water, and it can scratch bottom dwellers' bodies if they lie on it... So I'd like to avoid that.

So, what I'm asking is, can I put this in and not cause a mini-cycle from all the dead bacteria in the bag, and if so, how do I do it?

wash it.....fill a bucket with saltwater and put the sand in it, swirl your hand around stirring up the sand causing the water to slowly flow out of the bucket....the dead bacteria will rise faster than live.....so ive heard.....do that and drain water then add to tank and you will be fine.....i did it with my 38 and it was good...may want another opinion though

Thanks! I'll give that a shot unless someone has a good reason why I should do something another way. I should be trying it out tomorrow.

By the way, when I got the bag of it, it said on the bag "Just rinse before adding to established aquariums." But I don't always trust directions from aquarium supply manufacturers...
