What makes up a diy light fixture? reflectors, ballast, and lamps?

What do i look for in a ballast?

Where can I find the best prices on ballasts?

How about galaxy ballasts? Any good?

Ideally, you should determine what bulbs you want to use, then pick a ballast, although many don't do this. The bulb should say what ballast is ideal for it. However, for example, if you have a double ended MH bulb, many different ballasts will run it. I currently use Phoenix 14K bulbs and Galaxy ballasts. They are an electronic ballast, there are also "e-ballasts" which are actually controlled by a microprocessor. There are also magnetic ballasts. Some prefer magnetic over electronic. I like electronic because they are quieter, run cooler and are more efficient. My galaxy ballasts run very cool and are completely silent, so I like them.
