If you're talking about a banngai cardinal, I believe you only need an urchin if you plan to breed them in captivity.

The urchin that the fry prefer is the long-spined urchin. There's debate on whether it's reef safe or not.

Somebody here made an urchin out of epoxy and plastic sticks. Let me see if I can find the thread.

 

And to answer the happier part. I would say no, they only use the urchin for their fry. So unless your breeding them you don't need one.

 

Ball of zip ties. pretty realistic.

 

they bulldoze and eat corraline algae. thats why they arent exactly reef safe. they might nock corals around.
