ok quick question. i have always cycled my tanks with live rock and never have used base rock. i have read that a little live rock will seed base rock so here is my question. i have approximately 125lbs of base rock, is 10lbs of live rock enough to seed and cycle my 125 gal tank or do i need more?

    thanks in advance.

Plenty - but the more LR you seed with the faster the BR will become live . . .to a point . . .
But that is plenty for that setup!

You really don't need any live rock to "seed" the base. There's a common sentiment that adding live rock to base rock will also speed up the cycle. This may be true, but I've fully cycled with just base rock in 2 weeks where it took 3-4 with the combination, given that was a larger amount.

oh ok, i thought i had to have live rock to create the bacteria needed for a stable tank. so good to know. i had been set up with base rock for about 2 weeks and test were showing good but i wasn't really thinking of it as cycled because i had no live rock to have any spikes. i have added the 10lbs of live rock already so i will just continue to wait through the cycle since i didn't really think the tank was being cycled anyway. thanks for the help.
