As long as it doesn't put metals into the water I wouldnt hesitate to put it in the tank. Just because it's rock doesn't mean it has to be counted as part of the lr filtration. I don't hesitate to use rock as decoration.

Guy at the lfs told me same thing, swore by it. I put it in a bucket of saltwater with a powerhead. After 4 days the rock was covered in a horrible rust.

After that dont trust lfs employees opinion. In the end they just want to make a sale, Its the hobbyist's on these sites who actually care about our tanks and give us the honest but harsh truth.

    +1

Reality is that the bio-film does develop on everything in the tank, be it granite, marble, calcium carbonate, glass, or plastic.

I agree that's always possible; that's why I recommended that the OP test it in a bucket if he was uncertain. :)

While that is true how much surface & growing area do you have compared to pourous rocks?

I havent seen many places selling granite & marble live rock to seed a tank.

I agree that LR is much better for the bio-filter, and I wouldn't have a tank without it; however, not everyone uses LR... like in FO tanks (as opposed to FOWLR). Given proper filtration, they too can thrive without problems.

Again I agree. I'm only saying there's no rule against using it for deco, provided that it's tested for leaching first.

people use live rock because for one it looks natural, and two it does help cycle the tank faster and make the tank healthier in the long run. but in no way is that the only rock you can put in a tank and is that the only way to do a saltwater tank. for many years when reef tanks first were done they didnt even have live rock. not even dry rock they just used dead coral skeletons.

the question the OP was asking was whether the rock would be safe in his tank, there is no way any of us can be sure but judging from the fact he bought it at a pet store as dry aquarium rock im gonna take a wild guess and safe its safe for an aquarium. but it would be good to test it in a bucket to be sure. surface area of rock and using dry rock for a reef tank was not even in the OP.

2 pictures of the rock close up and then a couple from further back.

I have a lot of live rock in the tank already so this rock is not at all for filtration. I got it for its shape. If I can determine %100 that it is safe I will def go buy more. I kinda like the color contrast and the shapes are great. Also one of the rocks is very porous anyway.
