Hey guys I have a couple of very basic LED questions. Can you simply use any standard LED lights for some beginner corals like star polyp and such.

I am a couplet newb when it comes to lighting so treat me as such lol, do the LEDs need specific watt and wavelength. Certain reflectors or can you just slap any sufficient amount of LEDs to light the tank and be good for the hardy corals

I was cruising on ebay for led lights and found a pretty cheap set up but you usually get what you pay for with this kind of stuff. It has 72 total LEDs ( 9 blue 36 white) which I am shure arent very high quality but man thats alot. The white are rated at 8000k and blue at 12000k.

Is this light a total waste of time as Im thinking or would it be sufficient to illuminate a 40gallon breeder with basic corals, fish and live rock.

You are going to need more than one of those fixtures IMHO.

According to the item each of the white led lights puts off 1400mcd, which converted to lumens plus the 180 angle = 8 lumens per led but with a total of 63 that equals a total of 504 lumens for all the white lights. That is actually more than the marineland double bright LED which has 450 lumens, it only has 6 LEDs at 75 lumens a piece. But the ebay light sits high so I guess that distance also effects things. Also who knows a lot of things on ebay say one thing and don't perform, does anyone have experience with the item I linked form ebay?

Just based on lumens it seems bright enough. But like I said I am new to lighting so I am sure there is more to it then just lumens.

I just don't want to overpay for a LED that's made specifically for aquariums that is really no different from a standard LED when I am only doing some beginner corals
